What are they?

Ultrasound guided injections are well used in medicine as they are a harmless way of imaging deep into the body’s tissues. The image allows us to see very accurately all of the different tissues within the body. Ultrasound also helps prevent the patient being exposed to radiation or any harmful side effects.

The principle for ultrasound guided injection is that we can very accurately guide the injection directly to the target tissue. Maximising patient benefit and minimising required dose.

What can they do?

Research shows the following benefits from ultrasound guided injections:-

  • Reduced incidents of injury
  • Reduced overall side effects
  • Better patient comfort
  • Better patient satisfaction
  • Significantly more accurate injection
  • Improved outcomes.

Today, more patients are wanting to have their injection performed under ultrasound guidance because of the above reasons, that they improve accuracy, they improve outcome and they reduce the risks of side effects and injury during the injection procedure.

We are able to achieve excellent needle visualisation with ultrasound. Tracking the needle from the moment it enters the skin to the target tissue. We are also able to ensure the steroid is delivered accurately at the point which we wish to deliver it.

Why might this be for me?

Pain from joints, ligaments and tendons can cause significant discomfort that can affect all aspects of life and prevent you from doing every day activities. If symptoms do not respond to conservative treatments then an injection of local anaesthetic and steroid can be used to provide pain relief. If this sounds like you, it’s never too late to book a consultation with one of our expert healthcare professionals.

med(24) endeavors to diagnose and treat you within the same week, ideally even the same day! We understand that consistent pain can be a nightmare to live with. Our treatment pathways are safe, reliable and fast! Skip the waiting line at the NHS and go private for an experience worth every penny and return to feeling like you, sooner than later.

Brief overview of treatment

  • Before the procedure
We always perform an initial ultrasound scan of the region before giving the injection. This helps us to ensure that there are no reasons why we would not want to inject, that the diagnosis is accurate and that there are no significant structures, such as nerves or vessels, that would become injured whilst performing the injection. Ultimately allowing us to be able to identify a safe and comfortable path for us to deliver the injection.
  • How will the procedure feel?
In order to perform your scan it will be necessary to apply a small amount of gel to the skin surface in the area being examined. This gel dissolves in water and will not stain your clothing.

The skin at the site of injection will be cleaned using a cold antiseptic solution. Once the skin has been numbed, a fine needle will be put into the area to be treated and the local anaesthetic and/or steroid will be injected.

You may feel some pushing as the needle goes in and it will feel heavy/tight as the medication is injected. You may be asked to wait for a short time after the injection to make sure that you do not have a reaction to the medication used.
  • How long will it take?
Each examination is different and may take up to 30 minutes to complete, depending on the area to be examined and whether or not an injection is used.

Recovery & Aftercare

Our patients are instructed to rest the affected joint as much as possible after an injection, Usually you would be asked to rest a 24 - 48 hour period. The medication can take a few days to begin working and getting adequate rest can help patients achieve the maximum benefit from the procedure.

We advise you not to drive for 24 hours after an injection and you should make alternative travel arrangements in advance.

In addition, patients should be aware that pain may increase during the 12 to 48 hours following a joint injection. The needle can create additional inflammation in the affected area, which may lead to heightened pain. If this happens to you, applying ice and taking your regular pain medication should be enough to provide relief. However, you should contact your physician if these measures are inadequate or if you become concerned about your pain level.

How do they work?

There is a wide range of various different pain relief injections available, each with their own subset of specific uses to help treat and ultimately relieve pain in a given area. Typically, a steroid medication is injected to deliver a powerful anti-inflammatory solution directly to the area causing pain.

For example; a typical steroid injection, when injected into a joint or muscle, the steroids reduce redness and swelling (inflammation) in the nearby area. This can help relieve stiffness, soreness and overall chronic discomfort.

A few injections you would tend to see associated with pain management are as follows;

  • Sacroiliac Joint Injection
  • Occipital Nerve Injection
  • Facet Joint Injections
  • Epidural Steroid Injection
  • Peripheral Nerve Injections
  • Coeliac Plexus Block
  • Intravenous Regional Analgesia
What are Pain Relief Injections?

As by their given name, pain relief injections are for pain relief. Injections can be more effective than an oral medication because they deliver medication directly to the exact anatomic location that is generating the pain.
